Cooperation

Australia is a founding member of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). It was the sixth nation to ratify the agreement on October 31, 2018, which was the critical milestone that triggered the official entry into force of the pact 60 days later on December 30, 2018.

As a major agricultural and energy exporter, Australia has benefited significantly from the CPTPP through the elimination of more than 98% of tariffs within the trade zone. The agreement has opened up new high-growth markets for Australian farmers, manufacturers, and service providers, particularly in countries where Australia did not previously have a free trade agreement. In 2025, Australia took on the significant role of Chair of the CPTPP Commission, leading the general review of the agreement to ensure it remains the "gold standard" for global trade.
